Susan Powell's recent photo essay for Cross-Currents: East Asian History and Culture Review, The Cartographic Evolution of the Sino-Mongolian Border at Zamyn Üüd/Erlian, draws largely from the UC Berkeley's Earth Sciences & Map Library collections. Her accompanying narrative further details the story of the shifting relationship between China and Mongolia by looking closely at the border where the Trans-Siberian railroad crosses through: a story involving border disputes, a town that was moved 100 kilometers, and a German spy!
